Our submission to the GMTK Game Jam 2022.

Set sail on the high seas with your crew of... dice? Yes. Sure.

Roll with advantage by having them work together.
Loot enemy ships. Grow your reputation.
Get new hires, and upgrade your ship.
Rince and repeat until you're King of the seven seas.
Or are buried at the bottom of it.

Tutorial/Explanation

You are manning a pirate ship made out of six "tiles" with "dicemates", while fighting a similar ship and trying to grab some sweet loot.

The dicemates are your basic workers. For a tile on your ship to be of use it needs at least one dicemate on it. How effective they are at working that tile is based by the role of their dice. In general, each tile uses the highest roll of its dicemates, so having more mates on a tile increases your chances of a good result.

The (possible) tiles are as follows:

  • The upper deck, which is the left most tile: when crewed by dicemates this tile will assign the highest roll as temporary HP until the start of your next turn. Think of it as the captain dodging and weaving.
  • A single cannon tile: when crewed by dicemates this will assign the highest roll as damage to the enemy ship.
  • A double cannon tile: when crewed by dicemates this will assign the two highest rolls as damage to the enemy ship.
  • An empty deck: will do nothing.
  • The bow: when crewed by dicemates this will assign the highest roll as an attack/damage bonus to all cannon tiles on your next round. The bow does not need to be crewed on the next round, but any cannon tile you want the bonus to apply to will need to be crewed.

All of these tiles and rules apply equally to the enemy ship. The advantage you have over them is that you can move your dicemates in between turns(*).

Once you have defeated a ship you will gain loot and reputation. If you decide to keep on sailing the next ship you defeat will give you double loot and reputation. Though, of course, ships will get progressively harder.

If, instead, you decide to head to Port Paradice, you'll find your ship's HP fully restored, and you will get a chance to recruit another dicemate, for a fee. The available dicemates in Port Paradice will depend on your reputation. Higher reputation will grant you some dicemates which do not just roll 1–6. Some have a fixed value, for instance. Hover over a dicemate on your ship to see its stats.

In addition, in Port Paradice, you'll be able to upgrade any tile on your ship (other than the upper deck or bow), as you like, for a fee of course.

(*) Technically, you can even move them during your turn. This is a fun strategy, but can be buggy at times (sorry).
